InterContinental Hotel Group's Imaginary Green Hotel |
Filed under: Journeys, Green Hotels all around the world are pushing hard to go green and tell their customers all about it. The InterContinental Hotels Group has created a whole website devoted to the project. The solar powered 'Innovation Hotel' will include a variety of green features including the forwarding of all unused non-perishable food to charities or food banks, solar panels on the roof to heat water, a rainwater harvesting system to supply water to toilets, a roof garden rich in shrubbery to provide extra insulation, windpower to generate electricity for the hotel, recycled glass windows, furniture and fittings made entirely from recycled materials and household waste to provide heat and power. The plan is to use the virtual property if the Innovation Hotel to gradually roll out to all HG brands within the next few years.
Th Innovation Hotel has a green roof planted with low-maintenance plants which helps keep it cool in warm weather and insulate it in winter. Also on the roof there will be solar panels. Natural lava stone signage at the entrance and on the lawns replaces traditional plastic and metal signs. The decor is low emission paint, all the artwork produced by local artists to ensure a low carbon-footprint and there are recycling bins for guests to use. Left over food scraps are composted to create a fertilizer for use on hotel plants and lawns. Bathrooms feature low-flow showerheads and dual flush toilets. The hotel is more of a prototype of what green could be rather than the design for any specific hotel but it is an intriguing look at the variety of green options available for hotels.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wine Trails Not Just For California Anymore |
Filed under: Journeys, Wine Recently the Alabama Wine Trail opened to some controversy. The winery trail, which offers a map to the state's eight wineries has run afoul of a Baptist group which is against the promotion of alcohol. Wineries are driving increased tourism to unlikely places. While California is still the top wine tourism stop in the U.S. and Oregon and Washington are quickly gaining ground, the rest of the country is also working hard to lure wine tourists. With travel expenses running higher and higher, these destinations might be more appealing to those looking for a shorter trip closer to home. New York's Finger Lakes region has a number of different wine trails but some other winery trails are located in Iowa, Indiana and Virgina. Check out our gallery below for a look at wine trails around the country.

Luxury Houses: Holiday Escapes |
Filed under: Decor, Estates, Journeys, Books Hotels are fine as far as they go. For a really luxurious vacation however, renting a private house or villa is much the better choice. Of course the prices at the top-end can be astronomical. If money is no object, however, a new book called Luxury Houses: Holiday Escapes is a perfect guide to the best high-end hideaways around the globe. One of the standouts is Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld's former villa in Monaco (pictured here), which can be yours for a mere €30,000 per week. For that you get six bedrooms, panoramic views of the ocean and the mountains from an enormous terrace, a pool, Jacuzzi, game room and a tent on a private beach. The interior is described unironically as "quasi royal."
Also on display is the Birkenhead House in Hermanus, South Africa (about $7,000 per night) with eleven bedrooms and three pools, dominating a steep cliff above Walker Bay where whales frolic; and Villa Indigo in the Caribbean Sea within a protective reef in Anguilla with two pools and a private beach and sandbar, for $16,000 - $38,000 a week depending on the season; as well as dozens more ritzy rentals from ski chalets in Switzerland to modern palaces in China. %Gallery-22234%Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
